The achenes of Ceratocephala orthoceras have a straight beak and the sepals persist as the fruit forms. The dissected leaves also help with identification. Hornhead is a relatively new weed on the east slope, currently found mostly along the Front Range. The pictured plants were found at the Picnic Rock picnic area in Larimer County. C. orthoceras blooms very early in the spring.
